Panizzi Winery
Nestled in the heart of the Tuscan hills, just a few minutes from the historic centre of San Gimignano, Società Agricola Panizzi is one of the most prestigious names in the Italian wine industry. For over thirty years, the estate has been synonymous with quality, research and innovation, playing a decisive role in promoting Vernaccia di San Gimignano and establishing its reputation as one of the world’s great white wines.
Panizzi’s story began in 1979, when Giovanni Panizzi purchased the Santa Margherita estate, just outside the ancient city walls. What began as a personal project fuelled by passion and curiosity quickly evolved into an ambitious vision: to demonstrate the extraordinary potential of Vernaccia through meticulous viticulture, innovative techniques and a constant pursuit of quality.
After more than ten years of study and experimentation in the estate’s vineyards, the first Panizzi Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the famous “Etichetta Verde”, was launched in 1989. A wine capable of breaking with tradition and marking a turning point for the entire appellation, it has become, over the years, a benchmark for producers and enthusiasts alike.
In the 1990s, the winery continued to innovate, exploring Vernaccia’s potential for development over time and giving rise to one of the most significant innovations in its history: Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva. A visionary decision that earned major international accolades and helped to enhance the prestige of the appellation. The 1998 Riserva made history by becoming the first Vernaccia di San Gimignano to be awarded the prestigious Tre Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso’s Vini d’Italia guide.
Alongside Vernaccia, Panizzi also developed a high-quality range dedicated to red wines, rosés, passito wines and extra virgin olive oil, always with the same focus on quality and the authentic expression of the terroir.
In 2005, the estate became part of the Niccolai family, who fully share its philosophy and objectives. Under the guidance of Simone Niccolai, Panizzi continues on its path of growth, keeping alive the innovative spirit that has always distinguished it. This has given rise to new winemaking challenges, such as the project dedicated to Pinot Noir, launched in 2006 in the vineyards of Larniano. From this experimentation, wines have emerged that are appreciated by critics and the public alike, such as the Pinot Noir San Gimignano DOC and Ermius.
Today, Panizzi has around 75 hectares of vineyards and olive groves and produces over 200,000 bottles a year, which are exported to numerous countries around the world. Behind these figures lies a close-knit and highly skilled team that has been working together since the company’s inception. A group led by technical director Walter Sovran and supported, for the Pinot Noir project, by oenologist Alessandro Cellai, considered one of Italy’s leading experts on this grape variety.
Visiting Panizzi means immersing yourself in the very soul of Tuscan wine. Strolling through the rows of vines, tasting the estate’s wines and discovering the philosophy that guides every production decision allows you to appreciate the value of a business that has transformed a great vision into an international success story.
Completing the experience is Villa Santa Margherita, a splendid 17th-century residence nestled amongst vineyards and woods. Situated in a privileged location, it offers guests the chance to experience the most authentic Tuscan countryside and is an ideal base for exploring San Gimignano, Siena, Florence and the fascinating historical routes of Chianti.
Panizzi continues to this day to be one of the most influential ambassadors of Vernaccia di San Gimignano worldwide, combining tradition, innovation and a constant pursuit of excellence.
