The Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Villalago has very ancient origins and, according to tradition, was probably built by the Lombards when they established a defensive outpost on Mount Argoneta to protect the village. Its location and its dedication to the Archangel Michael, a figure particularly venerated in the Lombard world, reflect the strong link between faith and the defence of the territory.
Above the entrance door is a Romanesque-style lunette depicting Christ Pantocrator, shown holding the Book of Life and flanked by two kneeling angels. This decorative element lends the façade considerable symbolic and artistic value.
Inside the church, behind the altar, there is a niche housing a statue of St Michael the Archangel in the act of slaying a dragon with his sword, a traditional image of the victory of good over evil and a symbol of divine protection.
