Shrine of St. Anthony Abbot

Shrine of St. Anthony Abbot

A jewel of religious architecture dating back to the 13th century located in the heart of the town of Vibonati. This ancient building was built on a hill donated to the community by Princess Carafa of San Severo. Initially Romanesque in style, the church was always of Greek rite and has undergone numerous restorations over the years.

The sanctuary consists of three naves: a wide central one and two side naves of lesser width. Inside the church are numerous artistic and architectural treasures, including the baptismal font carved from an ancient Corinthian capital on the right at the entrance.

Above the vault of the nave is a painting depicting the saint to whom the church is dedicated, the work of a Vibonatese artist, A. Giannini, who executed it in 1832.

Placed above the altar, the half-bust wooden statue of the patron saint is carried in procession on January 17 through the streets of the town.

The shrine of St. Anthony Abbot is one of the most evocative places in Vibonati, where it is possible to breathe in the atmosphere of a bygone era and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

Despite numerous restorations over the centuries, the church has retained its original charm and continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

Whether you are passionate about art and history or simply looking for a quiet place to reflect and pray, the Sanctuary of St. Anthony Abbot is definitely a must-see during your visit to Vibonati.
