Church of Sant’Abbondio

Church of Sant’Abbondio

The Church of Sant’Abbondio, in the hamlet of Mezzegra, Tremezzina, stands out for its majestic appearance and imposing dimensions, which make it one of the most significant religious buildings in the area. It was built in 1724 alongside the previous Romanesque church, parts of which it still incorporates; these are now used as the sacristy and the brotherhood’s oratory.

The building is a significant example of 18th-century architecture, enriched by clear influences from European Rococo. Inside, the fresco on the dome by Giulio Quaglio stands out, whilst the decorative stucco work adorning the five black marble altars also plays a prominent role, helping to create an elegant and spectacular setting.

From the churchyard, one of the most evocative views of Lake Como unfolds: the vista takes in the Bellagio promontory and the Gulf of Lenno, framed by the mountains of San Primo and Grigna, offering a truly captivating view that combines art, architecture and landscape.
