The Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo is the main religious building in Sarteano and is one of the most significant sites in this Tuscan village, both historically and artistically. Its origins date back to the early 13th century, whilst in 1955 it was officially declared a Marian shrine, reflecting the strong local devotion.
The church features an elegant and harmonious Renaissance façade, whilst the interior is laid out in a Latin cross plan, with spacious and well-defined areas. Along the naves are side altars adorned with paintings, including The Baptism of Jesus and The Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, attributed to the 18th-century Sienese school.
Behind the high altar lies one of the collegiate church’s most important treasures: the wooden choir screen from 1513, crafted by a Sienese workshop, an example of refined Renaissance craftsmanship.
The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament is also of great value, housing an elegant tabernacle with a marble ciborium, created in 1514 by Lorenzo di Mariano. In the Chapel of Buonconsiglio, visitors can admire the Madonna del Buonconsiglio (1761) by Francesco Bonichi, flanked by two arched panels depicting the Announcing Angel and the Announced Virgin, attributed to Girolamo del Pacchia (c. 1514).
Rich in works of art and deeply rooted in the spirituality of the local area, the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo remains the religious heart of Sarteano to this day, a place where history, art and devotion blend together in a deeply evocative atmosphere.
