The Church of San Leone in Saracena dates back to the period between the late Romanesque and early Calabrian Gothic styles. The characteristic hexagonal bell tower, embellished with elegant Romanesque triple lancet windows that define its architectural appearance, remains from this earlier phase.
The exterior of the church is enriched by a fine 16th-century portal on the main façade, commissioned by the Sanseverino princes. The side portal, carved in limestone by skilled local stonemasons, also dates back to the same century and bears witness to the craftsmanship of the area.
The interior, on the other hand, has a Baroque style and is divided into three naves. The vault of the central nave is decorated with frescoes depicting four biblical episodes: the Sacrifice of Abraham, Judith and Holofernes, the Good Shepherd and the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, creating an evocative iconographic journey between the Old and New Testaments.
