Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia

Parco Archeologico di Baratti e Populonia

The Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia extends between the slopes of the promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti, including the area where the ancient Etruscan and Roman city of Populonia once stood, known since ancient times for its intense metallurgical activity to iron production.

The Archaeological Park is part of the Parks of the Val di Cornia and was inaugurated in 1998. It is divided into two visit areas that allow you to grasp the transformation of the landscape and the city over the centuries:
• in the lower part it is possible to see the two necropolises of the Etruscan phase, the calcarenite quarries and the industrial quarters, where the hematite ore from the Elba island deposits was worked to obtain iron ingots.
• in the upper part it is possible to visit the acropolis of Populonia, with the temples, buildings, mosaics and streets of the Roman phase, and the remains of the huts of the first Etruscan settlement and the walls that surrounded the city on the sea side.
Inside the park there is an Experimental Archeology Center that allows visitors to manually reproduce ancient objects, using archeologically certified working methods.
