Church of Sant’Elia

Church of Sant’Elia

The Church of Sant’Elia in Peschici, the village’s mother church, was built around 1200 using large blocks of marble from local quarries, a testament to the solidity and importance attributed to this sacred building from the very beginning.

The interior has a Latin cross plan and is characterised by an imposing sense of space. The large triumphal arch leading into the chancel, where the fine high altar is located, stands out. The nave is enriched by six side chapels, two on the left and four on the right, which help to define the church’s intricate structure.

Of particular interest are the three Latin inscriptions preserved inside: one is situated behind the high altar, above the crucifix, whilst the other two are found within two 18th-century chapels. These elements represent valuable historical and devotional records, which enhance the cultural significance of the church and recount its long history.
