House of Frescoes

The House of Frescoes in Novalesa represents one of the symbols of the strong link that united the village with the hill and the Moncenisio road, among the few examples in the Alps-Bussoleno in the Susa Valley, Moncalieri in the Turin area, and Brunico in the Pusteria Valley.

Characterized by a façade adorned with coats of arms of the House of Savoy and the princes of Europe such as England, France, Saluzzo, and Brittany, it probably had the function of offering a guarantee of professionalism and shows a custom of hosting high-ranking personages. The paintings on the facade can be traced to two distinct moments between the 14th and late 15th centuries.

Inside, the House of Frescos divided into two rooms has tapestry decorations, among the few survivors of secular buildings in the Susa Valley, with rhombus and wave motifs, as well as red corolla floral whorls and a red fringed velarium probably predating the 14th century.
