The origins of the fortress, built with the purpose of defending the area from Byzantine incursions, presumably date back to the 11th century. Originally, the Norman Castle of Zungoli had four cylindrical towers placed at the corners, but only three remain because one was destroyed by a strong earthquake in 1456. The façade of the building is mighty, 30 meters long and 14 meters high; over time the building underwent changes with the aim of transforming it into a civilian residence, and today it is inhabited by the Marquises Susanna di Sant’Eligio.
