The ancient Parish church of San Fortunato is situated near the village of Montefalco, on top of a small hill almost entirely surrounded by a forest of secular elci where there are caves dug in the clay, already used for the pagan rites and then paleochristian when became, as narrated by popular tradition, a place of retreat for San Fortunato who lived between the 340 and the 400. Here was born the first parish of Coccorone, ancient name of Montefalco until 1250. The church is preceded by a courtyard to the portico of the XV century where well you notice, between those in bricks, some columns reused from the original basilica, knocked down definitively in 1439.
The single nave, with the slightly Gothic vault, terminates in a square apse. On the left side we find the Chapel of Roses, built in 1512, with a cycle of frescoes on episodes of the Porziuncola indulgence. In the lunette of the portal we can see the Madonna and Child with Saints Francis and Bernardino da Siena and angels, as well as a fragmentary Madonna with Child and Angels, both of Benozzo Gozzoli; an altar with fresco depicting San Fortunato and the reliquary, and at the bottom on the left, a copy of the table showing the recruitment, always of Benozzo Gozzoli, in origin on the high altar.
