La Cuma Archaeological Area

Located in the so-called “La Cuma Locality”, halfway up the steep hillsides on which Monte Rinaldo stands, this Archaeological Area is the most valuable historical symbol of the village. It is an exceptional structure, once a place of worship of the Romans, dating back to the 2nd-1st centuries BC.

The Roman sanctuary complex today looks like a kind of wide sloping terrace, which presumably once had several levels, resulting in a scenic impact. It consists of three buildings: a central temple, a sacellum (minor cult building) to the west, and a majestic two-aisled, double-columned portico to the north and east. A small stream known as Fosso di Santa Lucia (Saint Lucy’s Ditch) once passed through here.
