The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate in Moncalvo features a façade adorned with statues of Saint Peter the Apostle and Saint John the Baptist, the patron saints of the church and of the confraternity that was once based here, depicted in accordance with traditional iconography.
The interior, spacious and well-structured, is characterised by a deep apse and six side chapels. Above the entrance stands a fine 19th-century organ built by the organ builder Bernasconi of Varese.
The chapels house numerous works of art. On the right-hand side are the altar of Saint Bartholomew, with a painting by Ferdinando Pozzo depicting various saints including Saint Francis of Paola and Saint Thomas Aquinas; the altar of St Charles, known as the Suffrage Altar, with a painting by Guglielmo Caccia depicting the saint interceding for the plague victims; and the Altar of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also decorated with a work by Caccia, featuring Our Lady of Mount Carmel flanked by St Simon Stock and St John the Baptist, in a composition of delicate colours enriched by elegant angelic figures.
On the left-hand side, moving from the apse towards the entrance, stands the Altar of the Most Holy Cross or of Our Lady of Sorrows, featuring a sculptural group depicting the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. Next comes the altar of Saint Anne, adorned with a painting by Orsola Caccia depicting the Madonna, the Child and Saint Anne, embellished with small angel musicians and a refined geometric composition. Also by Orsola Caccia is the painting above the altar of Saint Agatha, depicting Saints Liberata, Agatha and Lucy accompanied by angels bearing symbols of martyrdom.
Between 1739 and 1756, the altars were further decorated with scagliola altar frontals created by the Solari craftsmen of the Val d’Intelvi, featuring ornamental motifs of ribbons, flowers and birds, with various sacred images appearing at their centre. On the high altar, where the tabernacle of the Blessed Sacrament is located, the monstrance stands out, flanked by hilly landscapes that likely depict the Moncalvo area.
