In the heart of Massa Marittima’s Cittavecchia is a small museum that tells, with authenticity and charm, the story of the carpenter’s craft: the Antica Falegnameria (Ancient Carpentry). Set up in 1990 by the municipality, this workshop-museum was created thanks to the purchase of the original furniture, tools and machinery of the Forgeschi carpentry workshop in Gerfalco (Montieri), active from the late 19th century until 1990 and handed down for five generations within the same family.
The faithful reconstruction of the work environment of a Maremma craftsman allows visitors to immerse themselves in the past, among hand tools, planes, saws and the first work machines, witnessing the transition from manual skill to mechanization. Each object tells the story of skilled hands, practical ingenuity and carefully handed down traditions.
The Antica Falegnameria is not just a permanent exhibition: it is a living memory of artisan knowledge, a space that pays tribute to the dignity of manual labor and industrious creativity that has shaped the material culture of the Maremma for generations.
It can be visited at the nearby Archaeological Museum, located just 100 meters away in Piazza Garibaldi.
