Church of St Francis

Church of St Francis

The interior of the Church of St Francis in the village of Leonessa consists of three apsidal naves, with arches and pillars unequal in number and structure, revealing an emotional growth “conditioned by topographical (different ground levels), urban planning (interruption of a road and incorporation of other pre-existing buildings) and financial factors.
The sails of the minor naves have beautiful stone ribs; not so the apse, which was damaged in the 1703 earthquake. The nave, now barrel-vaulted, originally had a truss roof. Formerly belonging to the Conventual Minors, it was then the church of the Confraternity of the Holy Cross, which still runs it today.
