The Church of Santa Maria del Carmine is one of the oldest and most important minor places of worship in Isola Dovarese, located in the province of Cremona. This church was founded in the 13th century and was used as a lazaret during the many pandemics that struck the area due to the unhealthy air and the presence of marshes.
Despite its difficult past, the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine had a different fate than other churches in the area. In the 17th century, in fact, the church became part of the Carmelite religious institutes and the statue of the Black Madonna, which is still preserved, was placed there.
