Flea Fortress

Considered one of the greatest examples of Italian fortified architecture of the late Middle Ages, Rocca Flea was built incorporating an ancient place of worship dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel founded in the Lombard period (8th-9th century), called Sant’Angelo di Flea. It was rebuilt at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia in 1242. After being transformed into a stately palace, in the early nineteenth century it became a women’s prison and from 1888 it became a mandamental prison. Currently the fortress houses the Civic Museum of Gualdo Tadino, the antiquarium of the territory and there are also exhibited testimonies of Gualdese historical ceramics.
