Torrione della Battaglia

The Torrione della Battaglia is a historic fortification located in Grottammare, which dates back to the 16th century and is part of the town’s medieval defense system. Built between 1540 and 1550 by Lombard and local craftsmen, the keep stands near the “Marina” gate, strategically positioned overlooking the sea and the ancient harbor. Its cylindrical structure, with a semicircular base, features trefoil barbacans and a parapet decorated with rounded battlements. Its name, which translates to “soldiers’ tower,” reflects the protective role it played against pirate threats, a constant problem for coastal resorts until a few centuries ago. Today, after restoration in the early 21st century, the Torrione houses the Torrione della Battaglia Museum, dedicated to the works of sculptor Pericle Fazzini.
