older people say that it was a robber repentant to dig into the rock a small chapel. It is also said that the robber was then became, following its stay at the community of Cirigliano, the person to whom the citizens would entrust their children in the learning of reading and writing. Of course lessons took place in the place where now stands the cave.
Donato Grosso, born in 1846 in Avigliano (Pz), arrived in Cirigliano as vigilant on the construction of the new road, after having served 19 years in prison. The Mayor of the village invited donated to give a scholastic preparation to young people as he is one of the few to knowing how to read and write. The lessons are held in contrada cave, where the repentant robber had received in custody a plot of land and the kids, in addition to the school education, was the planting of trees and plants. In these years he began the excavation of a large boulder with the purpose to obtain a small place of prayer. During Holy Week the repentant robber went to give lesson to children bringing on the shoulders a heavy cross of wood as a sign of penance.
The Robber died in 1937 at ninety one years. In his memory remained the stone megalithic that inside it now hosts the Our Lady of the Cave, protectress of all wayfarers. The last Sunday of May a procession with the statue of the Assunta part from the village and is directed toward the cave where the statue goes to replace the icon.
