House Museum of Boccaccio

according to the tradition in this House Boccaccio lived the last years of his life here in Certaldo, in Tuscany. In fact, here would be dead in 1375. The house was bought and restored in the early years of the nineteenth century by the marquise Carlotta Lenzoni de’ Medici, poet and friend of many writers among which Giacomo Leopardi and Byron: equipped the building of a new furniture and a fresco of Giovanni Boccaccio the work of the painter neoclassical Pietro Benvenuti. During the second world war the house was almost completely razed to the ground by the bombardments allies but the fresco was the only thing that you saved miraculously.

The house museum is today the headquarters of the National Body Boccaccio and a well-stocked library focused on the work of the illustrious tenant. On the ground floor a large hall welcomes visitors with panels that have the life and the works of Giovanni Boccaccio. It is also possible to see a movie. On the first floor you will find both the library that the room with the fresco. Climbing on the second floor there is access to a covered porch and from here you can continue your visit up to the top of the tower, an integral part of the building, from which it is possible to have a splendid view of the Valdelsa.
