Opened to the public in 1992 following an agreement between the Municipality of Castagneto Carducci and the Espinassi Moratti family, the Centre’s purpose is to evoke the bond of affection that for a long time united Carducci to Castagneto. In fact, it must be remembered that the doctor Michele Carducci, father of the writer, practised his profession in Bolgheri from 1838, but due to his progressive and libertarian convictions and friction with the more conservative part of the population, he was forced in 1848 to move to the quieter Castagneto, where he stayed until 1849. After that, between 1879 and 1894, the poet was hosted annually in the home of the Espinassi Moratti family; this was the era of the ‘rebellions’, a long and cordial corollary to his attachment to the Maremma. Little Giosuè’s stay in the residence is commemorated by the commemorative plaque placed above the façade of the palazzo; the interior room and furniture, made available by the heirs of the previous owners, are intended to evoke the discreet charm of the old family interiors that formed the backdrop to Carducci’s presence in Castagneto.
