The sanctuary was built following the miracle, according to tradition, on 27 June 1657, and became the center of Marian devotion. Once upon a time there was a simple rural votive capital leaning against the wall of the Berne house, with the image of a Madonna nursing the Child Jesus, fresco of 1443. After the miracle it was thought to incorporate the work in a monumental sanctuary.
