Nestled amongst the greenery of the Val Messa, near Almese, the Goja del Pis is one of the most captivating natural spots in the Cottian Alps. Here, over hundreds of thousands of years, the force of the water has carved the rock, giving rise to a spectacular waterfall and a striking natural basin, creating a landscape of extraordinary beauty.

The highlight of the site is a waterfall approximately 14 metres high that plunges into a natural pool about 30 metres in diameter. The name ‘Goja’, which in the Piedmontese dialect means a pool of water, perfectly describes this small basin carved out by the continuous erosion of the stream.

The unique geological formation makes the Goja del Pis a site of great scientific interest. The rocks forming the valley are in fact serpentinites, materials rich in iron and magnesium originating from ancient magma in the oceanic crust. Their high hardness has slowed down the erosive action of the water, allowing the formation of the characteristic smooth walls and natural cavities that are still clearly visible today.

Even during the ice ages, the process of land formation never ceased. Water flowed beneath the enormous glaciers, carrying stones which, as they swirled round and round, carved deep cavities and rounded shapes into the rock – features that can still be seen along the route.

To admire the waterfall from a prime vantage point, a viewing point has been created, accessible via a short footpath protected by wooden fencing. The entire route has been enhanced with safety measures and information panels illustrating the geological and natural features of the site.

The Goja del Pis forms part of the Cottian Alps Geopark, a project dedicated to the protection and promotion of the Alpine geological heritage, which enables visitors to gain a better understanding of the natural phenomena that have shaped this extraordinary landscape.

The waterfall can be reached via a pleasant walk of around 50 minutes from the centre of Almese. The path winds through woods and ancient hamlets in the Val Messa, offering panoramic views and a complete immersion in nature, making it an ideal destination for walkers, families and geology enthusiasts.
