Spilamberto

Spilamberto, part of the Terre di Castelli Union, is a pretty village in the province of Modena, located on the west side of the Panaro river. Its origin dates back to 1210, a period in which the Bolognese concluded the construction of the castle of Piumazzo, to defend their territories and in response the Modenese built the Castle of Spilamberto on the opposite bank of the Panaro in an uncultivated place called Castiglione or Verdeta.
Transformed from a fortress into a residence, the Castle became the noble residence of the Rangoni, feudal lords of the area from the 16th century. XV. Recent restorations have brought back to use some of the most ancient environments, in addition to the north façade of the court. The elegant courtyard houses the Corte del Gusto, a showcase of culinary excellence; the "Formaggiaia" Room hosts a demonstration laboratory of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena.
Spilamberto is among the cities decorated with military valor for the war of liberation, awarded the war cross for military valor for the sacrifices of its people and for the activity in the partisan struggle during the Second World War. From the enogastronomic point of view, Spilamberto is known for the nocino, for Spilamberto's amaretti and above all for the traditional balsamic vinegar of which it boasts the seat of the homonymous Consorteria. In 2002 the Museum of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar was opened.
Every year, during the San Giovanni fair (the week that includes June 24, the patron's day), the coterie organizes the Palio of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, in which all the most important acetaie of the territory have always participated.
