Saluzzo is one of the best preserved medieval villages of Piedmont, located at the feet of Monviso and at the mouth of the Po and Varaita valleys. It was the capital city of an ancient Marquisate who dominated south-western Piedmont from 1140 to 1548 to the point of carving out a prestigious place among the great European kingdoms.
The city experienced its greatest splendor with the Marquises Ludovico I and Ludovico II between 1450 and 1520.
Even today there are traces of the noble heritage in the medieval village: ancient palaces, churches and towers with the old castle that dominates from above.
Tourists, walking through the streets of the ancient village, are conquered by scenarios of other times: Via S. Pellico and Piazza Cavour to go shopping or sip coffee in the elegant outdoor areas.
The sober and unobtrusive style of the people welcomes travelers to restaurants and accommodation facilities in the area, while a succession of festivals and musical events from June to October makes your stay in the village amazing, from the ancient music of the "Marchesato Opera Festival" to the unique rhythms of the "Occit'amo Festival" with its widespread events in the Terre del Monviso.
Saluzzo has a tradition and a wealth of skills in the artisan sector, especially wood, with a history rooted in time. START/Storia Arte Saluzzo in spring brings together the tradition of the area with the contemporary and young people. Professionalism, sensitivity and experience: so the Saluzzo artisans respond to the commissions of architects, interior designers, customers who are looking for new artifacts and new furnishing solutions.
A prominent place among the products of the area belongs to fruit-growing, cultivated by careful producers and exported all over the world. The breeding of the Piedmontese bovine breed offers prized meats. Fruits and vegetables, meats and cold cuts, cheeses and honey stand out on the weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings.
The appointment of the National Exhibition of "Agricultural Mechanization", a showcase of professional agriculture excellence, has a long tradition.
Saluzzo enjoys an excellent location between the valleys of Monviso and the Po river with the source a few kilometers away, whose area has been recognized by UNESCO as a cross-border Biosphere Reserve of Monviso (Mab).
Nature lovers cannot miss the Botanical Garden of "Villa Bricherasio" in the city, with numerous exotic plants acclimatized here. Saluzzo is a starting point to discover the enchanting Occitan valleys of the project.
The rich calendar of events in Saluzzo runs throughout the year and offers many events: the Carnival, the "Marquisate Half Marathon", the "Mercantico", the collector's market and the object used, the prestigious "Start/history and art in Saluzzo", the curious "Scarecrow Festival" of Castellar. "Effetto Notte" at the beginning of June starts the intense summer program in which "C’è Fermento" stands out, the first Italian festival of craft beers. Autumn is the time of the Uvernada that anticipates the events of Christmas in music.
