Castel Lagopesole, commonly called Lagopesole, is known for its Swabian past and for being one of the brigands’ refuge places led by Carmine Crocco. Known is the Castle, the last and largest residence desired by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in Basilicata.

Castel Lagopesole, usually called only Lagopesole, is one of the hamlets of Avigliano in the province of Potenza.
Like Melfi, Lagopesole is known for its Swabian past and for having been one of the places of refuge for brigands led by Carmine Crocco. The village stands on a hill at 829 meters high above sea level and overlooks the underlying Valle di Vitalba.
The Lagopesole Castle, the last and the largest residence commissioned by Emperor Federico II of Swabia in Basilicata is very well-known.
It has been an abode of hunting and fun erected in a suggestive position and in an area of great strategic importance since the high Middle Ages.
In the courtyard of the castle was shot the scene of the movie “Il Vangelo secondo Matteo” (1964) by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Inside, in the rooms, you can visit the “World of Frederick II” , a virtual museum that allows you to immerse yourself in time and space to discover the “first modern man on the throne”.

- From the North: take the A14 highway and exit at Foggia, Foggia-Candela road, Candela-Potenza road, Lagopesole exit.
- From the south: take the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway and take the exit towards Potenza. Take the Potenza-Melfi highway and exit at Lagopesole.
