Acqualagna is a town in the Marche region located inland in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, near the magnificent Furlo Gorge and is nationally referred to as the Truffle Capital. Strategically located due to its proximity to the highest mountains in the area, the Catria and Nerone, Acqualagna allows for hiking, biking and horseback riding in both winter and summer. Fascinating naturalistic itineraries that will take its guests to discover the most unexplored territory.
Acqualagna, therefore, represents a coveted destination and, at the same time, far from the traditional circuits, both for those who love gastronomic itineraries and for those who wish to visit and stay in places where they can breathe an 'atmosphere that has remained unchanged over time. But nature is not everything, because both in Acqualagna and in all the neighboring municipalities there is a history and culture that starts from Roman times and evolves up to the present day.
Near the present center anciently stood a Roman town, Pitinum Mergens, which was destroyed by Alaric; the surviving inhabitants later founded the castle of Montefalcone from which, in the late Middle Ages, the village was formed. Today, right in the center of the village, there is the "Antiquarium Pitinum Mergens" Museum, where artifacts from the excavation of the rustic villa found in Colombara di Acqualagna are displayed.
Also found near Acqualagna are archaeological remains pertaining to the route of the ancient Via Flaminia, the main Roman-era artery in the territory, opened in 220 B.C. by Gaius Flaminius to connect Rome to Ariminum (Rimini), representing in antiquity the key road axis connecting Rome and northern Italy.
Exploring the village, it is also possible to see many churches and convents that connect us to the past: the church of Santa Lucia, San Vincenzo, San Paterniano, the church of Santissima Annunziata and Santissimo Sacramento.
Acqualagna is known throughout the world for artistic stone working, one of the crafts that have made the village's name famous. A centuries-old tradition that has its roots in the work of the ancient Furlo stonemasons, who, thanks to their skill and the easy availability of material in the "quarries," also created important works and architectural structures in Urbino.
One of the most important events in the village is the National Truffle Fair, which takes place the last weekends of October and the first of November. It is the most important event in central Italy dedicated to the Tuber Magnatum Pico, during which it is possible to come into contact with truffle vendors, taste culinary novelties, attend themed conferences and learn about the simplicity of a unique place.
In addition to this event, Acqualagna offers two other fairs: the first in February dedicated to the prized black truffle and the second in July where the Regional Fair Of The Summer Black Truffle is held.
Acqualagna is surrounded by as many towns that tell the story and culture of the Pesaro hinterland. Just a few kilometers from the Truffle Capital you can reach: Piobbico; Urbania, known nationally for the art of ceramics and majolica manufacturing; Apecchio, located at the foot of Mount Nerone a few kilometers from Piobbico; Cagli, located at the foot of Mounts Catria and Petrano.
Acqualagna offers many food and wine cues to satisfy the culinary needs of its guests. Starting with the beloved winter white truffle, throughout the year you can enjoy typical dishes and seasonal specialties thanks to the restaurants in the area. The first to attract attention is certainly the king truffle, which in the village of Acqualagna sees its maximum power.
The area, following its ancient traditions, succeeds in offering the tour group a set of typical products from the area's farms, which produce fruits of the earth, ranging from vegetables and legumes, meat to cheeses, cold cuts to oils and wines. All this is meant to excite guests, making them live in a parallel reality rich in taste.
