Neive

Neive is a splendid medieval village located in the Western Langhe between Barbaresco and Castiglione delle Lanze. The oldest part of the village is built on a hillock, while the most recent, known as Neive Borgonuovo, extends into the plain below, crossed by the Torrente Tinella. Due to the wealth of vineyards and commerce, the strategic importance and the beauty of the place, "high" Neive was always chosen as the residence of the landed nobility and the wealthy bourgeoisie.

About the village

The historic center of Neive preserves a medieval structure, made of narrow cobbled streets that climb toward the Clock Tower and elegant buildings in terracotta. Feel should your name to the gens Naevia, noble Roman family which was a possession: around 100 B.C. was already a roman settlement significant, crossed by the via Aemilia Scauri, so called by the name of its manufacturer, the Consul Emilio Scauri. In the Middle Ages there was erected a fortified castle (of which today remains only a quadrangular tower) and in its vicinity was built a monastery of Benedictine monks from the Fruttuaria Abbey in the territory of San Benigno Canavese. The center, which thickens in the high part, remain some vestiges of the Ricetto, even if the ancient castle went early destroyed in 1276, in the course of one of the many wars between them the communes of Asti and Alba. Of the ancient village has maintained the atmosphere in virtue by winding cobbled streets that you have to rings around the top of the hill or rising toward the Clock Tower (XIII century), symbol of the ancient municipality. The heart of the village is represented by Piazza Italia: almost an eighteenth-century lounge in which overlook especially the administrative offices of the country. You will immediately notice a Palazzo Bianco - the ancient palace of the Town Hall - with arches and pilasters slender, which is in the upper part below the clock, a showy municipal coat of arms. The streets that lead to Neive pass through the typical landscape of the Langhe, done by white hills with vineyards: we are in a production area of great wines. Neive is in fact also destination of visits to its wineries, often hosted in dwellings, such as the eighteenth-century palace of the Counts of Castelborgo. There are four types of wines produced on the hills neivesi: Barbera and Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbaresco and Moscato d'Asti.
