Necropolis of Centocamere

What to see in Grotte di Castro, Viterbo, Lazio

The necropolis of 'Centocamere' (Casale Centocamere) owes its name to the presence of numerous tombs interconnected by an intricate system of holes and tunnels opened in the walls of the burial chambers by the people in hiding. The funerary structures are dug into the tuffaceous rock and appear to be arranged in at least three orders. The tombs show a chronological span from the 7th century BC. At Centocamere the tombs develop mainly along an axis perpendicular to the entrance, but smaller side chambers are also common.
