Pellico House

What to see in Saluzzo, Cuneo, Piedmont

Located in the scenic square of Mondagli, it is a building of medieval origin, located just outside the circle of walls in 1280, near the ancient door of the Mondaglis demolished in 1890.
The recent restorations allow to reread its history: four frescoed pointed arches constitute the supporting structure while the closed and terraced loggia on the piazzetta floor dates back to the beginning of the nineteenth century, which is overlooked by the elegantly decorated neoclassical hall.
In the small apartment on the first floor, the writer and patriot Silvio Pellico was born on June 25th 1789 and spent the first years of his childhood, but kept a fond memory of his hometown throughout his life.
Inaugurated in 2011 during the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the house-museum houses Pellichian memorabilia and manuscripts, donated largely by the writer's sister in 1858.
On the first floor, a room is dedicated to a large sequence of reproductions of frontispieces of "My Prisons", reflecting the spread of the work of Silvio Pellico, published in hundreds of editions. In the elegant neoclassical hall, a study by a writer from the 1800s was rebuilt.
