Church of San Tommaso at Villa

What to see in Gargnano, Brescia, Lombardy

were the bells of San Tommaso to ignite the curiosity of Lawrence in the moment in which he decided to visit the church. So, in fact, writes the English writer: "I began to seek it, because I wanted to go there. I discovered that it was very close from the square on the lake i could see it, and the country had only a few hundred inhabitants. The church had to be at a stone throw (...); and behold that suddenly, as for a miracle, I found myself shot in the parvis of my S. Thomas, immersed in a blinding sun...".

The original construction of the building, of which there are still traces of frescoes, dates back to the XIV century, but much more recent results to be its reconstruction. It is well preserved the fresco depicting S. Free (1535). The interior has three altars: the more dedicated to S. Thomas, dedicated to S. Andrea Apostle and one dedicated to S. Anna. The convent next to the church, erected in 1906 by the will of Bishop Peter Feltrinelli, hosted, until a few years ago, the Franciscan friars. Today it is the seat of the Centre Européen de Rencontre et de Ressourcement directed by Father Bruno Ducoli.
