The Abbey of San Vittore alle Chiuse was built by the Longobards towards the end of the 10th century, completely surrounded by mountains. It was called “from the locks” because of its position, as it was “closed” in the mountains.
Dating back to the 11th century, the current reconstruction dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries.The interior is dimly lit and devoid of decorations, punctuated by round-headed arches.
The architectural typology makes it one of the most significant Romanesque monuments of the Region, a stone’s throw from the Grotte di Frasassi.
A rather curious detail that jumps to the eye is the symbol of infinity near the left door of the altar.This symbol is reversed but even today we do not understand the reason, but it is believed that the Templars were to leave such an esoteric trace.
