What to see in Spigno Monferrato, Alessandria, Piedmont

Built in 1863, the building became the headquarters of the Philharmonic Society of Spigno Monferrato; at the same time, it carried out intense social and political activity in the context of the Workers' Mutual Aid Societies, maintaining relations with the then Senator Giuseppe Saracco (1821-1907), a native of Bistagno and Mayor of Acqui.

To this day older people refer to the building by the diction la sucietò. From about 1900 the premises remained the site of theatrical, recreational and cultural activities. After 1945, it became a dance hall, Around 1955 it was converted into a cinema projection room. With the birth of the cinema, Spigno became a center for gathering and socializing.

A CINEMECCANICA MILANO ZENITH III E movie projector is still preserved inside. After about 1990 the projection activity was abandoned. The building was completely renovated in 1990, keeping visible a fresco, representing an equestrian scene, painted by Spignese painter Franco Vasconi (1920-2014). Now, after a new interior renovation, it is in regular use. A theater season was organized in winter 2022-23.
