Palio of San Donato

The Palio of San Donato is the most important historical reenactment in Cividale del Friuli, a plunge into the past that brings the city back to its medieval atmosphere on the occasion of the feast of the patron saint, celebrated every year in August. Now in its XXIV edition, the Palio will take place on August 22, 23 and 24, 2025, transforming the historic center into a fascinating open-air stage.

During the event, the city relives the ancient glories of the 14th century: figures in historical costumes parade in solemn processions, while fierce duels and spectacular fights enliven the squares. The beating heart of the event is the challenge between the five historic boroughs of Cividale, which compete for the coveted trophy through running, archery and crossbow contests, re-enacting the competitions of the original tournament.

The Palio of San Donato is not only entertainment, but also the active involvement of the local area: associations, artisans, reenactors and commercial operators can offer medieval-themed booths, displays and entertainment. A not-to-be-missed festival that combines tradition, spectacle and community in an immersive experience for young and old alike.
