Night of St Mark’s Fires in Rossano

The Night of the Fires of San Marco is an evocative and meaningful event that takes place every year on 24 April in the heart of Rossano, attracting residents and visitors to relive a history rooted in the past.

During this magical evening, the historic centre is illuminated by hundreds of small flames, lit in every neighbourhood and alley. These fires, called “focarini”, are not just a decorative element, but a symbol of memory and gratitude. In fact, they recall the terrible earthquake of 1836 that devastated the city and celebrate the protection received from St Mark and the Madonna Achiropita, who preserved Rossano from even more serious damage.

The community mobilised, with families lighting fires in front of their homes with the support of the municipality, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Small tables set up with local products, such as sweets, cheeses and wines, invite passers-by to share a moment of conviviality. The tradition of offering food and drink to visitors is a gesture of hospitality and a way of introducing them to the delights of the area.

In addition to the fireworks and culinary delights, St Mark’s Firework Night is enlivened by music and shows that spread through the squares of the old town. Street artists, music groups and dancers liven up the evening, making it a festive and social occasion. The city is dressed up as a party, with its narrow streets filled with laughter and chatter, creating an atmosphere of community and sharing.
