Tournament of the Quarters
Event description
On 14 August 2026, Gubbio will once again relive the charm of the Middle Ages with the traditional Tournament of the Quarters, one of the city’s most heartfelt and spectacular historical re-enactments.
At the heart of the event is the contest between Gubbio’s four historic districts — Sant’Andrea, San Giuliano, San Martino and San Pietro — which compete in the famous Italian-style crossbow tournament from fixed positions to win the coveted Palio.
The event is preceded by an elegant historical procession in medieval costume that winds through the streets of the town centre to the picturesque Piazza Grande, where the participants are judged by a panel of experts on the basis of historical accuracy, style, poise and originality.
The Tournament of the Quarters is one of the highlights of the Gubbio summer and involves the whole town in an atmosphere of keen participation and local pride.
In the days leading up to the competition, each Quarter brings its squares to life with medieval taverns, food tastings, historical games, music and social gatherings, allowing visitors to experience Gubbio’s medieval traditions up close.
Organised by the Associazione Maggio Eugubino in collaboration with the Società Balestrieri and the Sbandieratori di Gubbio, the event combines spectacle, history and folklore in one of Umbria’s most fascinating medieval settings.
