Historical Procession of Grazzano Visconti
This event ended on 31 May 2026.
On the last Sunday in May, the village of Grazzano Visconti goes back in time with the evocative Historical Procession, a re-enactment that brings to life an episode that took place at the end of the 14th century. In 2026, the event will celebrate its 50th edition, confirming its status as one of the most fascinating medieval events in Emilia-Romagna.
The story re-enacted tells of the arrival of the noblewoman Valentina, Lady of Asti, guest of Count Giovanni Anguissola, during her journey to France to meet her future husband, the Duke of Orléans. The village dresses up to welcome her: nobles from Piacenza, ladies, knights and extras enliven the streets in a solemn and spectacular procession.
Grazzano Visconti, rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century in neo-Gothic style at the behest of Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone with the architect Alfredo Campanini, becomes the perfect setting for this historical immersion. The squares are filled with merchants, musicians, jesters, jugglers and storytellers, while military camps and demonstrations of ancient crafts engage adults and children alike.
The highlight of the day is the Torneo d’Armi (Tournament of Arms) in Cortevecchia, where Christian and Saracen knights face off in an exciting challenge. The Quintana a cavallo (Horseback Tournament), just outside the castle walls, determines the winner who will have the honour of accompanying Valentina on her journey across the Alps.
Throughout the day, there are food stands run by the Pro Loco and themed menus in the village restaurants, which complete the experience with flavours inspired by medieval tradition.
The Historical Procession of Grazzano Visconti is much more than a re-enactment: it is an immersive journey through colours, spring scents and atmospheres of times gone by, capable of fascinating visitors of all ages and transforming the village into an authentic 14th-century setting.
