The Palio della Marciliana 2026 is one of the most fascinating historical events in the Veneto region, a spectacular medieval re-enactment that transports the town of Chioggia back in time to the days of the War of Chioggia (1378–1382) between Venice and Genoa.

The event takes its name from the Marciliana, an ancient merchant ship built in local shipyards and used for trade in the Adriatic. It is from this history that an event has emerged which combines tradition, identity and spectacle, taking place every year on the third weekend of June.

For the occasion, Corso del Popolo, the beating heart of the city, is transformed into a vast medieval village: amidst taverns, markets, encampments and artisan workshops, hundreds of costumed participants bring the streets to life with dancing, music, performances and demonstrations of ancient crafts. Swordsmen, drummers and soldiers create an evocative atmosphere that captivates visitors of all ages.

The most eagerly awaited moment is the Palio delle Balestre Grosse, which takes place on Sunday afternoon. The crossbowmen from Chioggia’s five districts compete in a contest of accuracy, firing their arrows – known as verrette or piliotti – at the target, the corniolo. It is an intense and spectacular contest, which determines the winning district amidst applause and enthusiastic participation from the crowd.

The Palio della Marciliana is much more than a re-enactment: it is an immersive journey through history, where Chioggia dons the garb of the Middle Ages and relives its past with pride and passion.
