The Gypsies’ Race
Event description
The Corsa degli Zingari is one of the oldest and most evocative events in Abruzzo, a centuries-old tradition that attracts visitors and enthusiasts to Pacentro every year to witness a ritual that combines faith, history and local identity. The event takes place as part of the celebrations dedicated to the Madonna di Loreto, patron saint of the community, and is one of the most heartfelt moments in the village’s entire calendar.
The highlight of the event sees participants tackle a gruelling route strictly on bare feet. From the summit of Monte Cerrone, they descend along an impassable path to the Vella stream, before climbing back up through the streets of the historic centre to the sanctuary of the Madonna di Loreto. A test of endurance, courage and devotion that has been handed down from generation to generation and which retains its profound spiritual significance intact.
Around the race, Pacentro comes alive with religious celebrations, cultural events and opportunities for socialising, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the authentic traditions of one of Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages. Taking part in the Corsa degli Zingari means enjoying a unique experience, where historical heritage and folk culture blend in an event of timeless charm.
