Palio di Casole d’Elsa

Palio di Casole d’Elsa

📅 12 July 2026

Event description

The medieval village of Casole d’Elsa, in the heart of the Sienese countryside, is preparing to celebrate one of the most cherished events in its tradition: the Palio di Casole d’Elsa, scheduled for Sunday 12 July 2026.

More than just a horse race, the Palio embodies the very spirit of the Casole community; it is an event that brings together history, identity and passion on a day when the village is decked out in festive finery and the Contrade compete to win the coveted Cencio, the banner symbolising victory.

The tradition has its roots in centuries past and was established to pay homage to Saint Isidore, the patron saint of farmers, a figure deeply linked to the rural culture that has shaped the Casole d’Elsa area. Even today, the event retains its historical and popular significance, involving the entire community in an atmosphere brimming with emotion and participation.

Throughout the day, the historic centre will come alive with the colours of the Contrade, costumed processions, drummers, flag-wavers and songs that will accompany the public right up to the most eagerly awaited moment: the traditional horse race, during which the jockeys will compete for the Cencio amidst the enthusiasm of the Contrade members and the many visitors.

The Palio transforms Casole d’Elsa into a veritable open-air theatre, where history, folklore and a sense of community come together in a captivating spectacle. Strolling through the ancient streets of the village, you can soak up an authentic atmosphere, shaped by traditions passed down from generation to generation, colours, sounds and moments of great intensity.

Taking part in the Palio di Casole d’Elsa means experiencing one of Tuscany’s most iconic historical events – a perfect opportunity to discover one of the most charming villages in the Terre di Siena and be captivated by the charm of its ancient traditions.
