Nestled amongst the hills overlooking Lake Trasimeno, Montegualandro Castle is one of the most fascinating and historically significant fortifications in the Tuoro sul Trasimeno area. Situated at an altitude of around 450 metres, the castle has for centuries occupied an extraordinary strategic position, overlooking the Trasimeno valley and the Val di Chiana, along the ancient road that linked Perugia to the Tuscan cities of Arezzo and Florence.
Its commanding position made it, for a long time, an important military garrison and a key checkpoint on the border between the Perugia region and Tuscany. Precisely for this reason, the castle was often at the centre of wars, sieges and disputes between powerful noble families and rival cities vying for control of it.
The earliest documented records date back to 1202, when the castle came under the rule of the city of Perugia and was entrusted to the Marquises Uguccione and Guido Ranieri. Over the centuries, the fortress belonged to various noble families, including the Montemelini, protagonists of a long and troubled history marked by alliances, betrayals and reconquests. Captured several times and contested between Perugia, Cortona and Florence, the castle always maintained a fundamental strategic role until the 17th century.
According to some historical interpretations, the name Montegualandro is thought to derive from the Greek word ‘gala’, meaning milk, in reference to the pastures and flocks that once grazed on these hills.
The famous Etruscan stele of Montegualandro was also discovered in the vicinity of the castle; this important archaeological find is now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Perugia, bearing witness to human presence in this area as far back as Etruscan times.
Today, Montegualandro Castle is privately owned and is not normally open to the public inside, but the site retains an extraordinary charm. It is well worth a visit for a scenic walk along the castle walls and the surrounding paths, which offer splendid views of Lake Trasimeno, the Umbrian countryside and the Tuscan plain.
With its medieval history, breathtaking views and an atmosphere frozen in time, the castle remains one of the most evocative sites in the area around Tuoro sul Trasimeno.
