Palio delle Contrade in Bobbio

📅 27 June 2026 – 28 June 2026

The Palio delle Contrade in Bobbio returns on 27 and 28 June 2026 with a weekend entirely dedicated to history, medieval tradition and the rivalry between the town’s ancient districts.

For two days, the historic centre is transformed into a vast medieval setting brought to life by historical processions, travelling shows, period markets, musicians, flag-wavers, jesters and traditional games that draw residents and visitors alike into a unique and spectacular atmosphere.

The stars of the show are the five historic districts of Bobbio — Porta Alcarina, Porta Legleria, Porta Frangula, Porta Agazza and Porta Nova — each represented by colours, banners and costumed participants. The rivalry between the district residents comes to life through contests of skill and traditional games inspired by the 12th century, with the aim of winning the title of Contrada Regina.

Saturday evening is dedicated to the grand historical procession, with over seventy participants per district parading through the streets of the village to Piazza Santa Fara, accompanied by drums, performances and medieval scenery. There is also a spectacular fire show, flag-waving displays and the traditional rhyming contests between rival districts.

On Sunday, the Palio really gets underway with medieval games: archery, egg throwing, basket races, the greasy pole, tug-of-war and other spectacular contests that determine the winning district. Throughout the day, the village also hosts historical dances, falconers, medieval markets and family-friendly areas.

Accompanying the event will be medieval-themed taverns and food areas, where visitors can enjoy local specialities in a convivial and immersive atmosphere.

The Palio delle Contrade is now one of the most engaging historical events in the Trebbia Valley, combining spectacle, local identity and tradition in one of Italy’s most charming villages.
