Calendimaggio 2026
Event description
This event ended on 9 May 2026.
Calendimaggio 2026 returns to bring the town of Assisi to life from 6 to 9 May, reviving one of Umbria’s most fascinating and spectacular traditions. A festival that celebrates the arrival of spring through history, re-enactments and a sense of community.
During the festival, the historic centre is transformed into an authentic medieval village: narrow streets, squares and picturesque corners become the stage for songs, music, jousts and costumed performances, offering visitors an immersive experience of the past.
The protagonists of the contest are the town’s two historic factions: the Nobilissima Parte de Sopra and the Magnifica Parte de Sotto, who compete for the Palio through historical processions, re-enactments, games and evocative singing performances. Every detail is crafted with great philological care, making the competition even more engaging and authentic.
The winning faction is decided by a jury composed each year of experts in history, music and the performing arts, whose verdict is announced on the final evening of Saturday, the highlight of the entire event.
To complete the medieval atmosphere, Umbrian cuisine also takes on a historical flavour, with traditional dishes reimagined according to ancient recipes, offering a journey through the flavours of the past.
Calendimaggio is much more than a historical re-enactment: it is an event that defines the city’s identity, capable of involving the whole town and transporting everyone who takes part to another era, amidst tradition, spectacle and passion.
