There is a corner of Calabria that smells of history, milk and identity. A place nestled among the rolling hills of the Marchesato Crotonese, where ancient myths and rural wisdom are intertwined in the production of one of the most authentic cheeses of Southern Italy: Pecorino Crotonese DOP. According to legend, Hercules was the first shepherd of these lands. And among his herds and pastures, under endless skies and breathtaking landscapes, he built an agropastoral culture that would endure through the centuries.
Here Pythagoras also arrived, who on these very shores decided to found his school, uniting thought, food and well-being. In this blessed land, pastoralism has ancient roots. Even today, generations of herders guard the secrets of transhumance and milk processing. It is not just a matter of production, but of love for the land and deep belonging. The result? A cheese with an intense and delicate taste that encapsulates the essence of Calabria: Pecorino Crotonese.
Wild herbs such as sulla, oglio and clover give the milk an unmistakable flavor. The mild climate does the rest, making aging slow and precious. The resulting pecorino is soft, supple, sweet and persistent even after long months. A cheese that tells – at the first bite – of the bond between man, nature and time.
But this tradition would not have survived without the commitment of local communities. Crucial was the role of Apocc Soc. Coop. which led to the cheese’s PDO recognition, restoring one of its strongest identities to Calabria. Equally important is ARA Calabria (Associazione Regionale Allevatori), which, with its technical and organizational support, helps farmers grow, network and improve product quality, safeguarding the region’s livestock heritage. The ARA, through Sata, carries out functional controls to ensure the quality of Calabrian livestock products, including meat, cured meats and cheeses. It also promotes and enhances the same products from the livestock sector of the entire region through the OPs.
Behind each wheel of pecorino is a sun-scarred face, expert hands kneading fresh milk, hand-woven baskets and a passion that is renewed every day. It is hard work, far from artificial intelligence and digital shortcuts, but deeply human.
And it is also thanks to these new shepherds, often young, who choose to stay and invest in their land, that the story continues. Their resilience is the living legacy of Hercules and his successors.
Because Pecorino Crotonese DOP is not just a cheese: it is a culture, an ancient gesture, a symbol of resilience and authenticity.
