Congregation of Saint Sebastian

Congregation of Saint Sebastian

The Congregation of Saint Sebastian, located in the hamlet of Corticella in Cautano, is a small but significant place of worship that bears witness to the devotion of the local community. It was consecrated on 4 December 1721 by Cardinal Vincenzo Maria Orsini, as commemorated by a plaque placed beside the entrance.

The building, characterised by a style reminiscent of Byzantine elements, has a simple and intimate structure, typical of congregations dedicated to prayer and devotional activities. Inside, there are two main altars, both linked to particularly venerated figures.

The first is the altar of Saint Sebastian, dedicated to the martyr and adorned with a painting by the Neapolitan artist Giuseppe Castellano, depicting the saint in accordance with Christian iconographic tradition. The second is the altar of Saint Paschal Baylon, recognisable by the niche above it which houses the statue of the saint, an object of popular devotion.

Despite its modest size, the Congregation of Saint Sebastian is an important religious landmark for Cautano, a place where faith is expressed through simple forms that are deeply rooted in local tradition.
