Church of St Michael Archangel

Church of St Michael Archangel

The Church of St Michael the Archangel overlooks the picturesque village of Campodimele from above, standing as one of its oldest and most significant landmarks. Built in the 11th century on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple, it bears witness to the continuity of worship at this sacred site, originally dedicated to St Angelo and later dedicated to the Archangel Michael.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous alterations. As early as the 17th century, it was the subject of major renovations, with the façade rebuilt in the style of the time and the nave extended. Following damage caused by earthquakes, a major restoration in 1939 enabled the church to reopen for worship, restoring the community’s principal place of worship.
Externally, the gabled façade is simple and unadorned: a central portal preceded by a flight of steps leads into the building, whilst above it there is a circular oculus, surmounted by a triangular pediment. Next to the church stands the rectangular bell tower, with single-lancet windows on each side and a hipped roof.

The interior features a single nave, with side chapels framed by round arches and walls punctuated by pilasters supporting the cornice. The chancel, raised by a few steps, concludes the liturgical space with a simple yet harmonious structure. Architectural features such as the walled-up arches along the walls hint at the transformations that have taken place over the centuries, offering glimpses of the original medieval building.

Of particular note is the artistic heritage housed within. Among the most important works are an altarpiece by the painter Gabriele da Feltre, dated 1578, and a precious marble tabernacle attributed to the school of Tommaso Malvito, dating from between the 15th and 16th centuries. The artistic collection is completed by a number of wooden statues of great devotional value.

Today, the church is not only a place of worship but also a living testimony to the history of Campodimele, capable of recounting, through its stones and its works, centuries of faith, transformations and community identity.
