Church of Santa Croce

Church of Santa Croce

The Church of Santa Croce in Populonia overlooks the main square of the Castle and is a small but significant building of Romanesque origin, probably constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries.

Over time, the original structure has been extended with the addition of side chapels, a sacristy and a bell tower, adapting to the needs of the community without losing its essential character.

The building has undergone numerous restoration works, thanks to which valuable traces of the past have come to light: among these are sections of frescoes depicting saints and an ancient marble sarcophagus from the 3rd century AD, reused as an altar.

These elements make the church a place of great historical and artistic interest, capable of recounting the continuity of life and worship in the village of Populonia through the centuries.
