Church of Santa Maria Assunta

Church of Santa Maria Assunta

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Arquà Petrarca houses a rich artistic heritage, the result of renovations and additions over the centuries.

Among the most significant features is the high altar, which comes from the Hermitage of Monte Rua and was created by Francesco Rizzi, a member of the Bonazza school. The work is enhanced by statues of the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel, flanked by two busts of saints and two angels, creating a harmonious and striking composition.

Also of great value is the altarpiece dedicated to the Assumption, created by Palma il Giovane, which further enriches the sacred space.

Restoration work carried out in the early 20th century also brought to light frescoes from different periods: those of the Venetian-Byzantine school dating back to the 11th century and others of post-Giottesque influence from the 15th century, precious testimonies to the church’s long artistic and religious history.
