The Church of Santa Maria in Val d’Abisso in Piobbico is one of the most evocative and spiritually significant sites in the Marche hinterland, situated on the slopes of Monte Nerone amidst a wild and captivating landscape. Its origins date back to the 11th century, although its present appearance is the result of subsequent alterations carried out between the 15th and 16th centuries.
According to tradition, the sanctuary was founded on the spot where some shepherds discovered an image of the Virgin Mary, now kept inside the church and the object of deep devotion. Another legend tells that the image miraculously emerged from the rock of the so-called ‘Balza Forata’, also giving rise to the spring of water considered miraculous, which remains a destination for pilgrims to this day.
The building features a single-nave Romanesque structure, with a wooden truss ceiling and a ribbed apse. Inside, there are important works of art, including an altarpiece attributed to Raffaellino dal Colle, frescoes from the Umbrian-Marche school, and several Baroque paintings. In the apse, one can admire a majolica crucifix, whilst next to the high altar there is a 16th-century fresco of the Virgin and Child.
Of great significance is the Chapel of the Madonna, enlarged in the 19th century and renovated in the 20th, which houses the sacred image venerated by the community. Numerous frescoes uncovered during 20th-century restoration work bear witness to the sanctuary’s artistic richness, including scenes of the Baptism of Jesus and the Annunciation.
The sanctuary is also at the heart of ancient folk traditions: every year, on 8 September, the Nativity of Mary is celebrated with the evocative procession of the ‘rocce’ (rocks), a symbol of peasant devotion.
Taken as a whole, Santa Maria in Val d’Abisso represents a place where nature, faith and legend are deeply intertwined, making it one of the most fascinating sanctuaries in the Marche region.
