Holy Shroud Fresco

Holy Shroud Fresco

Located on the corner end of the porticoes of Via Palazzo di Città, in the historic center of Susa, this 18th-century fresco depicts the Holy Shroud supported by two cardinals, whom some identify with the city’s patron saints: St. Justus and St. Maurus. In the center of the composition dominates the figure of the Virgin, wrapped in a broad celestial mantle.

The work, by an unknown author, most likely dates to the early 17th century. Although today it is badly damaged, poorly lit and difficult to observe due to its elevated and shadowy position, it retains a certain charm, accentuated by the elegant gilded stucco moldings that frame the scene.
